Moving time is a great time to go through your things and try to get rid of some of them. Then, you won’t have as many items to move (or store). You also won’t move items over and over that don’t mean anything to you.
However, this is easier said than done. It can be really hard to figure out what you should keep and what should go.
Here are some tips to help you decide what you should get rid of.
- Clothes that don’t fit. Though you may swear that you will be able to fit those clothes again one day, it is not worth dragging a whole wardrobe around that doesn’t fit you. It can take up a lot of extra space that could be better used storing much more valuable objects or large furniture.
- Baby clothes. You can’t keep all of the clothes that your children wore. Keep one or two special ones and give the rest to someone who could really use them. Not only are you making room in your new home, but you are also helping out another family. Use your storage space wisely by only storing baby items that are hard to replace or expensive.
- Broken items. When you own a home (or even rent an apartment), it is easy to keep things when they break in the hope that you are going to fix them. However, you haven’t done so in how long? Throw out old electronics that don’t work, broken cups, and any items that are missing pieces. You will be amazed at how much more room you have once you start getting rid of everything that is broken.
Going through and getting rid of items can be the hardest. However, it is worth it when you realize how much more space you can now utilize in your storage unit without all the clutter.
